This case examines Walmart Inc.''s (Walmart) termination of its partnership with Bossa Nova Robotics (Bossa Nova), a technology start-up specializing in autonomous robots for retail industry. Bossa Nova''s robots, equipped with advanced scanning technology, were deployed across more than 500 Walmart stores to monitor stock levels and ensure price accuracy. Despite these potential benefits, Walmart discontinued the use of robots after finding that human workers could address inventory issues more effectively. The COVID-19 pandemic further reinforced Walmart''s decision, as human staff demonstrated superior adaptability in responding to fluctuating demand, product returns, and substitutions. This change put Bossa Nova in a risky position. They faced financial instability, layoffs, and a shrinking workforce. The loss of Walmart, its sole major client, resulted in su tions, limiting Bossa Nova''s ability to innovate and attract new customers. The case highlights the challenges of integrating advanced robotics in large-scale retail environments and raises questions for Bossa Nova''s future.
